Disney’s Propaganda

According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, propaganda is defined as:” ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause; also : a public action having such an effect.”

According to, the four elements of propaganda are:

  • Repetition: A message must be continuously propagated in order to take hold within the collective consciousness.
  • Simplicity: The message must be designed in such a way that it appeals to or is quickly understood by the lowest common intellectual denominator of the collective.
  • Imagery: This imagery could be pictorial or descriptive.
  • Sentiment: The message must contain as little detail as possible, and instead be designed in such a way that it appeals to some strong emotion or sentiment.

In Disney’s Education for Death propaganda, repetition can be found through the use of the image of the swastika repeatedly. It is found in almost every scene. The phrase “Hail Hitler” is used very often throughout the video.

This propaganda is very simple. Its simplicity largely contributes to the fact that it is a Disney cartoon. It is easily understood by all ages.

The imagery found within the propaganda are very powerful. Through the use of the repetitive swastika and uniform, yet intimidating, force of Germany’s image, the viewer would probably feel very threatened by the imagery.

This propaganda keeps the details few by choosing not to include the specifics of who are actually part of the Nazi party. This video doesn’t mention the fact that not all Germans were Nazis. They use the terms interchangeably.

The sentiment of the propaganda appeals to Americans by using the development of children as an emotional appeal. By portraying children as mindless followers of Hitler, probably made viewers very upset and sensitive to the cause.
